    Internal Piping

The pipe extending through the dam is termed the “principal spillway.” It is designed and sized to release excess water in the reservoir in a controlled way. The elevation at which it is placed determines the “normal” maximum water level in the reservoir.
The principal spillway in smaller watershed dams can run from an 18” corrugated iron tube to a 48” concrete pipe. The principal spillway at HorseThief Reservoir will consist of a 60” steel pipe, encased in concrete.
