    Core Trench

The core trench is the “anchor” of the dam, extending underneath the dam from end to end. Excavated deeply enough to insure a good foundation, its dimensions vary depending on underlying geologic formations and soil structure.
Due to the sheer volume of the embankment, the core trench at HorseThief Reservoir will be extended a minimum of one foot into unweathered shale bedrock.
